Twenty years ago President George H. W. Bush signed into law the civil rights act for the disabled, Americans with Disabilities Act. On September 15th from 10:30am - 3:30pm, MERIL will be celebrating this milestone with a special day of recognition and a celebration of its own. Our vision is “A Barrier-Free Northwest Missouri”. To accomplish our vision, MERIL is developing a wider range of accessibility services. At our celebration of 20 years of the ADA we will unveil the MERIL Seal of Approval and provide a description of the application process and the qualifying criteria. Accessibility services will be highlighted, which include training in the concept of Universal Design, accessibility surveys, community education on barrier removal, and community partnerships working toward accessibility. We will also have several presenters discussing their direct interest in the implementation of the ADA; some professionally, some personally and some both. They will share with us their experiences with barriers to inclusion. This very special event will take place at the Remington Nature Center at 1502 MacArthur Drive. Lunch will be provided, but RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED by September 10th. Please call MERIL at 816.279.8558 or email to marilyn@meril.org with your reservation to attend. |

As people with disabilities ourselves, we know it can be difficult to communicate with those who do not share similar experiences. That’s what makes peer counseling so valuable to you. MERIL can put you in touch with people who have been where you are now, and have found the resources to live independently. If you need these services, please contact Sharon Leonard or Sharon Courter MERIL’s CDS In-Home care allows you to direct your own personal care services. Your personal care attendant can even be a family member, except for your spouse. For more information on CDS services contact Jim Pawlowski MERIL also has a more traditional In-home care service. We offer Basic and Advanced personal care services, along with homemaker chore services, respite services, and advanced respite services.
